ony Blair and Chairman of London 2012, Sebastian Coe, have promised that the Olympics in London will be the most environmentally friendly and sustainable yet.The pair discuss progress for the Games in a podcast for the Downing Street website as a milestone is reached in the preparations – there are now 2012 days to go before the event begins.
In the podcast, Sebastian Coe says the Sydney Games was the first to properly consider environmental and sustainability issues, but that London will raise the bar again.
A Sustainable Development Strategy, to be published later today, will promise to cut carbon emissions, reduce water consumption and make sustainability fundamental to all Olympic procurement.
The PM says it will not only be “the greenest Games ever” but will also be a “cutting edge example of sustainability”.
During their conversation they discuss how, following the Games, athlete accommodation will be redeveloped for key workers, sport facilities will be used by the local community, and residents will be able to enjoy one of the largest urban parks in Europe.
Lord Coe says:
“It is a complex project and the regeneration occurs at so many tiers, alongside world-class facilities, but world-class facilities that we want to be able to return in a sensible way to the community.”
